Solar Panel Questions

What are the benefits of a residential solar panel installation?

Do you dread when your electric bill arrives each month? Like most homeowners in New York and New Jersey, your bill is probably unpredictable.

With a residential solar panel installation, you will immediately save money on your monthly electric bill by paying one fixed amount each month through a leasing program designed to fit your lifestyle.

Depending upon the size and type of solar system you have installed, you could shave up to 100% off your electric costs. If you choose to purchase the system, you could reduce your electric costs to the bare minimum required to keep you connected to the grid.

While saving money on your home’s energy costs is a good reason to consider a residential solar panel installation, there are several other benefits to consider.

  • Increases the value of your home

Recover nearly all the investment costs of solar panels if you move, on top of annual energy savings.

  • Requires little maintenence

Few moving parts means system breakdowns are very unlikely. With a 25-year-warranty, you’re still covered should an issue arise.

  • Utilizes renewable energy

Solar panels reduce your dependence on a volatile energy market by utilizing the sun’s power.

How do residential solar panels power your home?

Remember having a calculator that was powered by light? It had a small panel of photovoltaic (PV) cells that allowed it to run or recharge its battery without having to plug it into electricity or change batteries. On a larger scale, solar panels on your roof work in a similar way. Each panel contains multiple PV cells made of semiconductor materials, such as silicon, that convert sunlight into electricity.

As the light from the sun hits the PV cell, the semiconductor material absorbs some of its energy. In this process, the energy knocks electrons loose, thus enabling them to flow freely. The electric field within the PV cell directs the electrons into a certain direction, which establishes a direct electrical current. This electricity is drawn from the PV cell through the metal contacts that are built into the cell.

The direct current that is produced by the network of solar panels on your roof cannot be used in its direct form. As it leaves your panels, it travels down a wire conduit to an inverter. This inverter then converts the fixed current into alternating current, which can then be used to power your home’s appliances.

The most common types of home solar panel installations are:

Grid-Tied

Power is drawn from the system during the day and what is not used is sent to your electric company through the grid. Your home is powered by the electric company at night.

Stand-Alone Grid-Tied

This system works the same as a grid-tied system, but a battery backup storage system is also installed that will provide you with power during outages or severe weather.

Off-Grid

This type of system is not connected to the power grid and is used only during the daylight to power things such as solar hot water heaters, water pumps or greenhouses.

Stand-Alone Off-Grid

Similar to off-grid, but this system also has battery storage or a fueled generator to produce power when the sun is not out.

Are there incentives to reduce upfront costs?

Your residential solar panel installation will start providing you with savings immediately. Your initial costs are determined based on whether you decide to lease or purchase your solar panel system outright.

  • Leasing Solar: When leasing from SunPower® by Infinity Solar, your initial upfront costs are zero. You will just pay a fixed rate every month during the term of the lease while they own the system.
  • Owning Solar: If you choose to purchase your solar system, you will have to pay all the equipment and installation costs upfront. You can recoup 50% of these costs in the first year through a credit on your Federal income taxes, with the rest being recouped over time.
  • Solar Incentives: Rebates and other incentives may be available from the state and your local utilities. Depending upon your electricity usage, you should fully achieve your return on investment within five to ten years of installing your system.
